Late May, we took a weekend trip to the Netherlands, precisely Amsterdam but we also saw Rotterdam too. So here is to a weekend in Amsterdam.
Weekend in Amsterdam proved to be fun with way too much walking. Nearly getting run over by a bike, there are far too many bikes, if you’re there, just be cautious of them. There is a specific bike area on the road.
We stayed in the area; Amsterdam Rai, which was towards the south and walked it all the way to the Centraal station and back through waterlooplein and the Jordaan. Amsterdam is quite small, public transport ticket was very complicated at first, but if you get a card from the ticket machine it lasts for 24 hours and you can use the metro, bus and tram.
To sum up Amsterdam;
Bikes: As we said earlier there are more bikes than anything. There a bike paths between the pavement and the road for cars.
Canals: There are about 100 canals, we took a boat tour and the guy who was the captain? said it.
Architecture: I loved the architecture, I also loved the apartments overlooking the canals. It had such a chilled vibe. I want one of them too, well to live in one of them for a while.
Tall and good looking people: The majority of the people were tall, I think, I have read somewhere that Dutch people tend to be the tallest. I also thought they were good looking too and dressed well; these are from my observations. I saw very well dressed people riding a bike which looked cool. Dutch people apparently are the top two good looking people
They speak English: Everyone that I spoke to, spoke a near perfect English. I don’t speak a word of Dutch, although I did learn few words. I thought the people were friendly as well when I asked for directions; which were mainly men that I asked.
Tulips: I even got a tulip pencil as a souvenir from Amsterdam.
They even sold canabis ice-cream; no, I didn’t try. I also went past the red light district, not at night though. I believe there is more to Amsterdam than those. In the area around the sex museum; Damrak, on the same street there is a restaurant that has some awesome pizza.
The must sees are the museums; Anne Frank museum, Rijksmuseum and Van Goth museum. The queues are usually long so you could take a boat trip instead, takes about 1 hour.
There are many outside cafes, a lot of people drinking beer by the canals and people sitting outside their apartments overlooking the canals. They have a more laid back lifestyle than London, that is for sure.
Amsterdam is quite picturesque with the canals and luckily while we were the it was hot and sunny which makes it even more pretty, walking down along the canals and having a bit of a movie moment.
Have you been to Amsterdam or planning on going? What are your thoughts ?
